I have a question about crohn's disease?

I have had crohn's disease for about 23 years now. My health, in general, is pretty poor. What I am wondering is, are my chances of getting intestinal cancer or any other kinds of cancer greater because of the crohn's disease? I have heard diffferent things on this in the past. My health is not holding up well. Thank you for your help! Please elaborate if you can! Thank you!

unfortunately u r mora liable to have intestinal carcinoma than a normal one,as there is chronic irritation and inflammation to the intestine.
i think u must have a regular follow up with ur physician with endoscopy and biopsy to early detect any malignant changes for the best treatment and prognosis for ur condition.

Crohn's disease, pronounced krohnz, is an illness characterized by inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (the stomach and intestines). The disease usually affects the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, and parts of the large intestine. The disease is also called ileitis, regional enteritis, or granulomatous colitis, depending upon the location of the inflammation. Crohn's disease is similar to ulcerative colitis, and together they are referred to as inflammatory bowel disease.

Symptoms of Crohn's disease vary. They include periodic episodes of abdominal cramps, fever, diarrhea, poor appetite, and weight loss. These symptoms can range from mild to severe. Other symptoms can include joint pain, mouth sores, skin lesions, and inflammation of the eyes and liver. Severe cases of the disease can cause intestinal blockage, scarring, and accumulations of pus within the abdomen. In most cases, symptoms first appear in people between the ages of 15 and 30. When Crohn's disease occurs in children, it can delay normal growth and development.

Medical scientists do not know what causes Crohn's disease. There is evidence that some people may have an inherited tendency for developing the disease. Some researchers believe the inflammation is a response to an infectious organism, such as a bacterium or virus. Others think the disease is caused by an abnormal reaction of the immune system. In this reaction, the body attacks its own healthy tissue in the gastrointestinal tract.

There is no cure for Crohn's disease. Physicians treat the disease with steroid hormones and other anti-inflammatory drugs. Antibiotics may also be used. In severe cases, surgery to remove portions of the intestine may be necessary.

Hello, I to have Crohn's and have had it for 14 yrs now and have had a foot of my intestines removed. Been on many drugs for this awful disease, but to answer your question, I have been told by more than on gastroenterologist that my chances of having colon cancer are greater than those of a normal healthy person. chrohn's inflammatory process goes through the entire wall of the intestine. Take care of polyps early. Something interesting though, I was diagnosed with Hypogammaglobulinenemia with subclass defienciency which they feel is rare but does have some relation to the Crohn's,. Since it is a auto-imnmune disease, check with a immunologist. See how your immune system is fairing. Best of luck to you. Go to CCFA.org (Crohn's and colitis foundation they may have alot of informtion for you. I wish you good health

I also have moderate to severe crohns disease and have been diagnosed for 4 years now. My doctor had put me on remicade treatments and it worked. I had stopped the treaments after feeling better, but yet I now need them again as problems are now reoccurring. My doctors also are suggesting a colostomy and said that this will help improve my health and take away alot of my diseased areas. Good Luck.
