IBS and Crohn's Disease?

What is worse to have? Irratible Bowel Syndrome, or Crohn's Disease and why?

Crohn's Disease is much worse to have than IBS which is more common (10-20% of the population experience this disorder). Although they both have common symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal cramping, Crohn's Disease can lead to obstruction along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), rectal bleeding, abscess, fistulas, ulcers, skin lesions, joint pain, severe weight loss in a short period and has the potential to affect the entire GIT. IBS on the other hand is more of a functional disorder and doesn't cause inflammation or changes in bowel tissue or increase your risk of colorectal cancer. In many cases, you can control IBS by managing your diet, lifestyle and stress.

In my opinion:
Crohn's disease bc it is a far more serious disease and more likely to lead to death.

IBS is much less severe I feel bc more often IBS is actually Celiac Disease incorrectly diagnosed. And Celiac Disease is easily treatable by a gluten free diet, nothing else.

See links below for more info.

crohn's because its more serious, it can ruin your guts and some times you have to get some one you guts taken out cause crohns will rot it, and you have stomach problems!! and the medicane is 200$$$$$ a month...

Crohn's Disease is MUCH WORSE than IBS ... but they are both 'really bad conditions' that can lead to an 'ostomy' for the 'relief from the constant pain and sickness.' Chron's Disease is MORE THAN JUST A PROBLEM WITH THE BOWELS though, and that is what makes it 'worse' ...

They are both hard to deal with. Crohn's is more serious, but contrary to the first answer it does not lead to death. This is a huge and serious misconception and has been perpetuated by under-educated persons. I have had crohn's for 21 years and other than a colon re-sect surgery 8 years ago, I have very little going on with it, and I maintain simple maintenance doses of medication.

The bigges factor, is how the person deals with it. If a person decides they have the disease and it is in control then it will be and quality of life will be effected. If the person decides they are going to maintain control and continue with regular life as they are used to, then things will be much easier to deal with. Learn about the diagnosis, educate yourself educate those around you, and openly talk to your gastro about what is going on and what isn't.

By boyrfriend has Ulcerative Colitis, an IBD just like Crohn's. BD's are MUCH more serious than IBS, but both can be extremely frustrating and painful.

The medications for Crohn's and UC are exactly the same. You're looking at Remicade infusions about every other month that cost about $9,000.00 each, then another daily medicine like Asocol or Colazol that will run around $300.00 a month, then Imuran which is also up there, then corticosteriods for flareups. And hospital time.

My Boyfriend, B---, spent over a month in the hospital. His UC was very severe and he was revived on the way to the hospital on his second of 3 long stays. He lost so much blood when the ulcers in his colon ripped open (the Doctors debated if it was toxic megacolon). He had 3 infusions in 1 day and was anemic for almost a year after...

IBD wreaks absolute havoc on the body, and yes, it can kill. It also ups your risk for colon cancer 100% for severe IBD or just 20 times higher for regular IBD.

I have a friend with IBS, yes it can make life heck, and yes you can end up in the hospital for it, but it's much less severe and life-altering.

If you want to know more, contact me. I can tell you anything you need to know about the condition. I've had to become an expert to keep B--- alive and to keep him motivated. You don't know how quickly you can feel that life's not worth living once you've got to deal with IBD.

Crohns.

I have IBS, my mother has Crohns. She has literally pooped a toilet full of blood.

She gets remicaide once a week.

Me on the other hand will wake in the middle of the night, experiencing the worst pain in my gut, and spend the rest of the night either on the floor of my bathroom, or on the toilet.

She needs to have part of her intestines remove.

Her life expenctancy dropped.

I live pretty much a normal life, except 'attacks' now and again. My mother has had an episode standing in line at a store, requiring a change of clothes.

I stay of top of my IBS. I never would want to be diagnosed with Crohn's.

The whole pooping blood thing.....that is not good.

I hope you don't have either.

Crohns is much worse because it is considered an incurable disease. IBS is irritating and uncomfortable, but not debilitating. Crohn's patients can die in an extreme case be/c their body stops absorbing nutrients no matter how much they eat or how many supplements they take. The book "Makers DIet" is about a guy who healed himself from crohns disease. check it out.
