Is this too much Flagyl for Crohn's Disease?

My GI doc has prescribed me 500mg of Flagyl three times per day for three weeks for Crohn's disease. The pharmacist seemed concerned that that was a large dose and a long time to be taking it. Anyone else take Flagyl for Crohn's? Or, any opinions about this dosage?

It is a high dose and 3 weeks is a long time. Usually it is prescribed for 7-10 days. It is also used as a prophylaxis for Crohn's disease. But, not sure of the dose for this or the duration. This drug is pretty hard on your liver which is probably why the pharmacisti is concerned. Good pharmacist who is doing his/her job. I would ask the doc about the dose and how safe it is to take it. Or, you could get a second opinion.

Stop taking it and fing another doctor immediately! Flagyl is not used to treat Crohn's disease. It's used to kill certain types of bacteria/parasites that can cause anything from vaginitis to diarrhea. I don't think it's recommended for Crohn's patients at all.

I would seek the advice of another doctor. If you have Giardia then I can understand giving you Flagyl

Please do not drink alcohol while you are taking Flagyl.

BRAND NAME: Flagyl

DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Metronidazole is an antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Anaerobic bacteria are single-cell living organisms that thrive in low oxygen environments and can cause disease in the abdomen (bacterial peritonitis) liver (liver abscess), and pelvis ( abscess of the ovaries and the fallopian tubes). Giardia lamblia and ameba are parasites that can cause abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea in infected individuals. Metronidazole selectively blocks some of the cell functions in these microorganisms, resulting in their demise.
