Bad Cramps but just spotting?

My Period was due today and I have had massive cramps all day, probably the worst cramps that I have ever had and usually I have an extremely heavy period for the first three days but today i had light spotting and thats it. Like trace amounts of blood but still very painful cramps. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm a little worried that something might be wrong but I cant think of what would cause the cramps without any flow. Any ideas? If I don't start within a day or two I'll call my doctor, i just wanted to know if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them?

I'm on the patch and they feel like period cramps, which I always get really bad but this time its worse then ever... It isn't constant, it comes and goes like normal cramps but just spotting unlike the usual very heavy period.

Are you on the pill, or other birth controls? Have you passed clots at all? Do the cramps feel (other than the severity) like they normally do? Have you had sexual intercourse since your last period?

If you have had sex you should go to Urgent Care. Very painful cramps accompanied with having an irregular period (a not normal period) can be a couple of things that may need immediate attention.
