What causes muscle cramps?

2 weeks ago I started having muscle cramps. They are in the legs at night and during the day I get them in my back, on my side and in the pelvic area (All I have to do is turn the wrong way, sneeze or cough and I get a cramp). Went to the doctor, blood work is ok. Potassium, magnesium, electrolytes, etc are good. I take a muscle relaxer but it does not help. I am tired and somewhat weak from all the cramps I get on a daily basis (I usually wake up about 5 times a night with leg cramps). I do everything right (drink plenty water, stretch etc). My doc don't know what to do next. I had this problem last year but after taking magnesium and potassium for 2 days my cramps stopped. It has been 2 weeks now. Could this be something more serious? What kind of specialist do I need to see for this? Help!!

The muscle cramps occurs due to the lack of oxygen to the particular area.
According to ayurveda, Indian medical science, it is due to the aggravation of Vata.
You can try some good herbal medications without any side effects. They will modify the circulation and corrects the imbalance in the body. You can try Arjith forte, Stifain, Rumalaya forte etc. Please try free on line consultation at any of the reputed ayurvedic sites

Have you tried calcium supplements? It sounds like you may also need to see another doctor- or your own to find out what is happening. I hope it's nothing serious. As well, what time of day is this happening? I am thinking Restless Leg Syndrome which I had when I was pregnant over the summer with our daughter. Good luck to you ok?

You can verify if the Fibromyalgia's (aka Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) symptoms match yours. Sometimes doctors cant make a diagnostic with only the blood work. I hope it is not, and you can overcome this very soon. God bless you.

" The defining symptoms of fibromyalgia are chronic, widespread pain and tenderness to light touch, and usually moderate to severe fatigue. Those affected may also experience heightened sensitivity of the skin (also called allodynia), tingling of the skin (often needle-like), achiness in the muscle tissues, prolonged muscle spasms, weakness in the limbs, and nerve pain. Chronic sleep disturbances are also characteristic of fibromyalgia, and some studies suggest that these sleep disturbances are the result of a sleep disorder called alpha-delta sleep , a condition in which deep sleep (associated with delta EEG waves) is frequently interrupted by bursts of brain activity similar to wakefulness (i.e. alpha waves). Deeper stages of sleep (stages 3 &4) are often dramatically reduced."
