Life expectancy for someone with Cerebral Palsy? |
I have a 24 yr old brother who has cerebral palsy. He does not talk at all, he emits sounds. He does walk by himself (not as balanced as a normal person), he needs help for his basic needs, like feeding and bathing, using the restroom. He still soils his pants every night. My parents are in their 60s and have always been taking excellent care of him. He goes to occupational and physical therapy twice a week, to which it helps a lot. Mentally he is like a one yr old, he only understand simple commands as "go outside", "bathroom", "hungry", "TV". He also has seizures (petit mal), to which he loses consciousness for a little while. He is always on medication for that. I love him and I have heard that people that have cerebral palsy have a shorter life spam for some reason I can't recall. Is that really true? This is highly individulalistic and dependent on other concurrent medical problems that the person with CP may have. Most commonly, if there are swallowing difficulties present, the risk of pnemonia remains high and can definetely shorten the life span. Any concurrent digestional problems also need to be taken into consideration...bowel obstructions can lead to an ischemic bowel which can be life threatening. Since CP is so highly variable, your brother's physician would be the best person to answer this question. |
