Cellulitis or dvt?

hi am i just worrying 5 weeks ago i awoke with pins and needles in my right leg that night i was in agony and couldnt stand on it at all the next day my leg became red hot and i was told i had cellulitis which i received iv antibiotics at home via 24/7 nurse team for 1 week the infection went but the swelling didnt change then they thought i could have a dvt i was given injections for a week which made the swelling go down andi was sent for a scan but they couldnt see anything. my foot is still swelling and and skin is peeling off i am still on antbiotics my gp has just reffered me to a vascular doctor at the hospital but i think i could wait up to 8 weeks for an appointment i feel i should be seen quicker am i just worrying or do you agree my gp needs to treet this as an emergency.

Cellulitis is acute bacterial infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue most often caused by streptococci or staphylococci. Symptoms and signs are pain, rapidly spreading erythema, and edema; fever may occur and regional lymph nodes may enlarge. Diagnosis is by appearance; cultures are not usually necessary. Treatment is with antibiotics. Prognosis is excellent with timely treatment.
Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is clotting of blood in a deep vein of an extremity (usually calf or thigh) or the pelvis. DVT is the primary cause of pulmonary embolism. DVT results from conditions that impair venous return, lead to endothelial injury or dysfunction, or cause hypercoagulability. DVT may be asymptomatic or cause pain and swelling in an extremity. Diagnosis is by history, physical examination, and duplex ultrasonography, with d-dimer or other testing as necessary. Treatment is with anticoagulants. Prognosis is generally good with prompt, adequate treatment; common long-term complications include venous insufficiency with or without postphlebitic syndrome.

hmmmm. could be either. does sound like deep vein thrombosis.. and it sounds like staph aurus (MRSA)..which i am sure thats what you were treated for..

they should be able to get you in faster. Your dr can call the dr there and get you in faster. I used to work for a multispecialty practice/internal medicine residency program...that was common practice when they needed a patient seen quickly, they call the dr themselves explain situation...

If it is serious you could be dead by the time you are seen! If that specialist cant see you sooner, make your dr's office find someone else...your life is in your GP's hands until you are seen by that specialist!!!!

If your GP won't, then call your insurance company! they will make sure the situation is handled...Especially if your dr is a provider of your insurance and if the specialist is too!

As a patient you have rights!

The skin peeling and selling is due to the cellulitis that may still have a little. If you have had an ultrasound and that showed as negative for dvt then you need not worry. The vascular referral is to check out if there is a vascular reason for your cellulitis (can be caused by external factors..i.e flea bite etc). I you find that you have increased pain or sweeling just go to a+e at your local hospital

If cellulitis gets serious you could end up in hospital just as I was a few years ago.
Kick up hell with your GP. 8 weeks is a ridiculous time to wait for such a potentially serious infection.
