What is Celiac Disease???

My stomach has been bad for a while, we dont know what it is. They thought it was Luppus, and now they think its Celiac Disease, so i have to go get tested. My mom and stepdad who is a doctor explained what it is, but i still dont understand. I'm scared.

What is Celiac Disease? please give me every little detail possible. Thanks so much.

Coeliac disease is an inability to digest the grains barley, oats, wheat and rye due to a sensitivity to gluten which is a compound found in those grains.

The gluten damages the cells lining the small intestine, and the mucosal surface becomes flat, losing the normal folds known as villi. These damaged mucosal cells are unable to absorb nutrients from the food and severe nutritional deficiencies eventually occur.

Coeliac disease is often hereditary. The disease can begin at any age and in children, it appears after weaning them onto gluten containing foods. In adults it usually begins in the third and fourth decade, and its more common in females.

The symptoms are usually very gradual in onset and may start with only fatigue. Common intestinal symptoms include abdominal discomfort, bloating, diarrhoea and weight loss. There is difficulty in absorbing fat from the food. This makes the bowel actions large, pale and fatty so that they tend to float on top of the water and are difficult to flush down the toilet. Mouth ulcers and dermatitis around the corners of the mouth are common.

Having said all that though, abdominal discomfort, bloating and digestive troubles are also associated with lactose intolerance. Could it be rather that you have an intolerance to milk and dairy products?? Test this easily by yourself first by keeping a food diary. Simply have a glass of milk and note how you feel after one hour ............ gassiness, belching, wet far*ting (sorry no other way to say it), acid reflux (that burny acid coming back up your throat when you try to lie down and sleep at night after you've had a bowl of ice cream??) and bloating are all symptoms of lactose intolerance.

If that's not the case then the only categorical way to make an accurate diagnosis of coeliac disease is by removing a tiny piece of the mucosal lining of the upper small intestine for examination under a microscope. This is called a biopsy and is done through a fibre optic telescope passed through the mouth.

If it is Coeliac disease that you have don't worry cos it does respond extremely well to dietary modification (cutting out all the foods and ingredients you can't absorb efficiently). Also, it would be wise to periodically check for deficiencies of iron, folic acid, vitamin B12 and fat soluble vitamins (A, D E and K) if you have Coeliac disease. This is easily done with a blood test.

Because patients with Coeliac disease are more likely to suffer with immune dysfunction, I think it is wise for them to also supplement their diets with Vitamins E, C and A and selenium (all very powerfull antioxidants - free radical scavengers). Essential fatty acid supplements such as flaxseed oil and cod liver oil are also worthwhile to strengthen the cell membranes in the cells lining the small intestines.

Lastly, is it at all possible that there is nothing wrong other than you are severely dehydrated??

Expecting your digestive to digest food and transport essential vitamins and nutrients with no water in your system is an extremely huge ask ............ Water is imperative to life. Without water your body will have a terrible time digesting food, transporting nutrients, lubricating your joint sockets etc.etc.etc.etc......... nothing substitutes for water. your body needs at least 2 litres of water daily to function efficiently.

If so, try drinking more fresh filtered 20 minutes before or 20 minutes after meals so as to enhance the digestive process rather than impede it by drinking during your meals and diluting the digestive juices.

also, try to cut back on drinks such as coffee, tea, alcohol, sodas and soft drinks (if you drink any of them) which will all do great job of dehydrating you. ie: just 1 can of soda or soft drink will make your body peesh out up to 12 cups of water !!! 1 cup of coffee will make your body peesh out about 2 cups of water ........... read the book by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D.... "Your body's many cries for water"...... an astounding and scary and very true read.

I hope you feel better really soon and I sincerely wish you the very best of health and vitality buddy鈾モ櫏

CHEERS

..... :0) Report It

My doctor thought that I had Celiac Disease, so I did a bunch of research. That was 2 years ago so This is about as detailed as I can be

basically its an allergy to wheat, so flour and flour is in alot of things. So its kinda like being lactose intolerant but with wheat. So you should have things made with corn flour and stuff like that, get some rice cakes too!! good luck!

Lupus is an auto-immune disease that affects the skin.
Celiac Disease or Sprue is a gluten sensitivity
in which the small bowel cannot digest wheat products.
Dermatitis Herpetiformis (a lumpy skin rash)
is a secondary illness of Sprue. Celiac is controlled
by abstaining from wheat and wheat products.
Relax...you should be much better when you remove the
wheat from your diet. A consult with a Registered
Nutritionist is a good idea.
