Celiac Disease- are whole grain oats ok?

Does millville's Crispy Oats contain Gluten or wheat?
I have Celiac Disease am Im trying to find out if I can eat them. The dietition said I can have oats as long as they arent contaminaated, but Im not sure if there is anything in it that will make me sick. I have at it for two days and I feel ok right now, but its the long term that worries me if I cant have it.

The answer of this question is not known for sure.
There are "gluten free oats" and they are obviously fine- but it has to say that on them.
As far as general oats, people used to think they were bad for celiac. There was a study in finland in 2005 that less than 50mg of oats a day did not cause any intestinal damage at 6 months (longer isnt known) It should be said that a lot of American Celiac experts disaggree with that study and recommend no oats.
So, sorry the exact answer is unknown.
No oats is obviously the safest,
Some oats MAY be ok, but is not known for sure.

You need to call the manufacturer of Millville's Crispy Oats and ask if their product is gluten free. There are pure oat products but from what I hear they're fairly pricey.

The manufacturers don't mind if you call. I call all the time when I have questions and everyone has been pleasant and as helpful as they can be.

Great question. Initially it was thought that oats had gluten in them, though research has revealed that the source of gluten for oats was due to cross contamination from other grains that contain gluten. Hence the same plant was used to process oats and wheat, for example, and the same packing equipment was used, etc. This is why the oats had gluten in them.

Now you can easily purchase gluten-free oats on line from this source:

These oats are processed in a gluten-free facility. I purchase them for my boys (on a GF diet) and have had no problems to date. Purchasing GF oats will ensure that you do not have a reaction to any hidden forms of gluten from cross contamination.

Hope this helps to answer your question and good luck!
