Celiac Disease - does anybody have it??

My poor Hubby is suffering terribly. Has an appointment on the 20th with a Surgeon as he is experiencing lots of problems with stomach and bowels but I have just been reading about Celiac Disease and this could be him but you know how it is - you make the symptons 'fit' what you are suffering.

Here is the National Institutes of Health webpage on celiac - bringing a printout of some of it comes in really handy at a doctor's appt because it's not something they usually think of. Up until just a few years ago not much was known about it, so some doctors aren't up on the latest information.

There's also a great online support group -

LOL! Well, thank God for small favors, huh Andrew?

;)

Nancy Report It

My mum has coeliac disease, she had it for 10 years before it was dianosed and was in constant pain. If they are going to test for it, he will first have a blood test and then if anti bodies show a biopsy to confirm it.
It is a very manageable condition - just have to cut Gluten completely out of his diet. It's difficult at first as you don't realise how much food actually contains Gluten, but if this is diagnosed then he will be given all the relevant info - Mum has a book listing products she can and can't eat and the food is labelled very well these days. There is no surgery available - Coeliacs is for life
I have IBS diagnosed last year and this is also a possibility. I had agonising stomach pains and problems going to the loo, all i did was change certain aspects of my diet and when I'm having a bad day, I have pills to take.
It could be something really simple and your doctor will be able to diagnose the problem. That is the worst thing about the internet now - looking up symptoms and thinking the worst. It may be something really simple, so don't look anymore and wait til he's seen the doc!!
Good luck

Celiac Disease is rotten. It often goes undiagnosed and i#untreated for long time. You have been given a couple of good links, I will add one more, its a support group for Celiacs...;

My son does.
You can't have surgery to cure it, as someone else mentioned you have to cut out wheat, not intestines!

If you are off wheat long enough, the bowel will start to heal and he'll feel better. Unfortunately long term complications include disorders of the connective tissues and cancer. You can't cut wheat out until testing is done though, or it will mess up the test.

Good luck

just cut out gylcogen from his diet
it is usuallt found in wheat products

celiac disease damages the small intestine and causes great pain, surgery is the best option
