Cataract - operation?

I have consulted 4/5 eye doctors and also patients who had cataract operations. Doctors advised that cataract operation is advisable at any time i.e. any stage of disease and not to wait until ripe stage of cataract whereas some suggested that cataract has to be operated when it is ripe, the same confusion is in the advise of patients. Please give guidance on this subject. There are 3/4 TYPES of operation procedures. Which is the safe and best procedure for cataract operation? I am staying in Mumbai - India.

Avoid anyone who says the cataract has to be "ripe" this is a desperately old tem and approach.

Though not risk free cataract surgery is about as safe as you can get. In the absence of unusual health facotrs, cataracts should be operated on as soon as the vision is sufficiently inconveniencing to outweigh the cost and risk of the operation. For many people the driving standard is the critical factor here, though some may be badly affected by glare while still technically having good vison on an eyechart. Exceptionally some individuals wih a very high minus Rx opt to have the operation before any cataract is present, to obtain a near zero prescription.

To obtain the best binocular refraction and stability it may be advisable to have the second eye done as soon as the first is well healed, even if the second eye has little cataract. This will depend on individual details.

Almost all modern surgeries leave the posterior lens capsule in place as this reduces the risk of vitreous loss and macular reaction, and also provides a location to hold a corrective implant.

Many surgeons prefer foldable implants as this lets the operation be done with a much smaller incision, stitches frequently being unnecessary.
Some of the newer multifocal lenses implants are not foldable and they would require the larger incision.

The choice over single vision each side/ monovision/ bifocal implants has to be personal.
For some the chance to see distance and near without glasses woudl take priority...
I'd be more worried about the possible loss of very best vision and night-time glare with multifocal implants.

get it done buy a good doctor...i would not wait...i used to work for three opthomologists...the earlier you take care of it the better the results....

I had cataract surgery almost 2 years ago and it is wonderful. I had the foldable lenses and all has gone well.

I had the second eye done 6 weeks after the first.

It was believed earlier that cataract should be fully mature to get operated upon but nowadays studies suggest that there may be chances that the cataract may get hyper mature and burst also as the vision of the cataract eye is already abnormal it may put more strain on the other eye leading to problems further.
All the procedures are good for cataract surgery the thing that matters most is the quality of lens which you put after all it is the lens which is going to help you for good vision post surgery
