Is the view fields examination result reliable in verifying that your eye has been damage by a cataract?

Visual Field tests are given to evaluate your peripheral vision and this is to assess damage to your vision from glaucoma, not cataracts. The pressure behind eye caused by glaucoma will damage your peripheral vision if left untreated. In very severe cases, people have horrible tunnel vision (that is that they cannot see anything off to the tops and sides, only straight ahead) so driving becomes impossible.

The visual field test requires that your chin is positioned in a hooded machine. Each eye is done separately so the opposite eye is patched. You are instructed to stare straight ahead at a target light while little lights will blink all around, to the top, left, right, and bottom. You are to squeeze a little clicker every time you see a light flash - but your eyes must remain focused on the target light. The results of this test will tell the doctor how much of your peripheral vision has been damaged by printing out a graph-like sheet that shows the lights that you saw, and the ones you missed and it will also tell the doctor where the peripheral vision is damaged.

Insurances will usually only pay for this test every 6 months to a year, so its usually only given as often as that and is quite effective in evaluating your visual field.
