My left eye is in pain. no gunk, dry, feels like there's something in it. It's not pink eye. What is this?

Not cat allergies. Not traditional pink eye. Been to many doctors all of whom are scratching their heads. It is getting worse. I looked up chlamydia, and that doesn't seem to be the case. Nor does mere"dry eyes" this is in one eye and is painful from my brow to the bottom lid , but especially the eyeball itself. Please help!!!! My eyes look red and i have a little discharge in my eyes when i wake up, but only sometimes, and it is not like the pink eye i have had in the past.not at all. it is like somebody punched my eye. and then, it goes away, or almost seems to, then it swings back into action and puts my little eye in misery. I have no health insurance and i have spent over $700 trying to fix this. A rare exotic disease? A new form of pink eye? cataract rupture? an ancient fated curse? what is this? any ideas are much appreciated!!!

This could be any of a variety of diagnoses:

- iritis:
clues - previous history, joint/aches aches/stiffness

- conjunctivitis/keratitis:
clues - white/yellow/green discharge, flu-like symptoms, contact lens use, contact with someone with an infected eye

- allergic conjunctivitis:
clues - other eye involved, seasonal history, onset after a unique exposure

- ocular hypertension - high presure inside the eyeball:
clues - cyclical nature of symptoms, the pain 'come and goes' during the day.

- refractive error - need for glasses can also produce strain or ache in and around one eye, especially if one eye is weaker than the other.

Find this out:
- is your sight in this eye as good as the other?
- is there a family history of eye problems?
- is there any redness in or around the affected eye especially when compared to the fellow unaffected eye?

If you have concerns aboyut any of these, have a 'complete eye test' at your optometerist / opticians. Any unusual finding should prompt a referral to an ophthalmologist.

Chances are this would be nothing significant, but better safe than sorry.

You need to have an eye test.It might be an infection.Have you been swimming? Has an insect or a tiny stone landed in your eye whilst in the car? Could be any number of things, you need to get it looked at properly.

Im not too sure but it might be conjuctivitis. Check with a doctor.
