Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms? |
I have just been diagnosed as having Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I have had blood tests and there is no obvious cause. I have a wrist brace to wear now and that does help but does anyone know why I only get the symptoms of numbness and pain at night and not during the day? its because when you sleep people tend to sleep with their wrists either flexed or extended, which increases the pressure in the carpal tunnel, which increases the pressure on the median nerve, which gives you the tingling. You may notice in during the day if you keep your wrists flexed a lot. Wrist splints can work for some people but the treatment of choice is a carpal tunnel decompression. It is a small operation with a very high success rate for alleviating the symptoms this is typical of carpel tunnel. Most likely because when you sleep you bend your wrists cutting of blood supply leading to poor circulation. Also, blood test do not tell you causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. See a Neurologist for nerve conduction testing. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome initially feel numbness and tingling of the hand in the distribution of the median nerve (the thumb, index, middle, and part of the fourth fingers). These sensations are often more pronounced at night and can awaken patients from sleep. The reason symptoms are worse at night may be related to the flexed-wrist sleeping position and/or fluid accumulating around the wrist and hand while lying flat. been there..... very painful.... wearing the brace at night ensures that your wrist is held in the proper position whilst you sleep. I used to curl my hands up and tuck them in. by doing this I was creating the pain because I blocked the carpel tunnel nerve unknowingly. It doesn't happen in the day because you are moving your wrist all the time and it's not confined like in sleep. It is pressure on the nerve as it passes through a small gap in the bones of the wrist, known as the carpal tunnel. A lot of the pressure is due to the posture of the wrist ,do you wear the brace at night? During the day you are moving and the posture and stress on your wrist is changing but at night in bed it is still,in one position and the symptoms are apparent.I presume that in the night if you move and change position the pain improves. My father in law suffered from this.He attended the Rheumatology clinic at the London hospital and had an injection in one wrist and had no more problems for some considerable time. |
