CTS is a syndrome resulting from compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel in the wrist. The carpal tunnel is a gap formed by the wrist bones (called the carpal bones) and the tough ligament that forms the roof of the tunnel (the flexor retinaculum). The passageway is rigid, so swelling of any of the tissues in this area can cause compression of the nerver, causing a numbness or pain in the wrist, hand , and fingers (except for the little finger),

It is mostly found in middle aged women. It may occur during pregnancy, before menstruation, or during menopause. It is also linked to diseased such as rheumatoid arthritis, acromegaly, and hypothroidism, or following injury or trauma to the area.

Treatment consists of splinting the affected area to immobilize it for several weeks. Anti-inflammatory drugs may help improve the condition. Sometimes, if that does not help, a physician may inject a corticosteroid drug into the ligament. In sever cases, surgical resection of the flexor retinaculum may need to be carried out to relieve the pressure on the nerve.
