Is it possible to get relief from Carpal tunnel Syndrome by massage therapy? |
My mother is 83 and over the years has developed carpal tunnel syndrome by crocheting. Does she have to have surgery? Unfortunately there is no real cure for CTS. True CTS is a buildup of scar tissue in the carpal tunnel. Generally, when the wrists are flexed or extended you increase the pressure on the (finger) tendons in the carpal tunnel. Combine this with finger movements and you cause severe friction and eventually inflamation. The inflamation causes scar issue. Compounded over time the result is CTS. I had surgery on both wrists.....It's the only cure for carpal tunnel.....sorry....good luck........ My husband just dealt with carpal tunnel and he was given physical therapy before surgery. I believe it helped, but the key is that you need to stop doing the movement that caused the syndrome in the first place. In his case, his job was the problem and he couldn't stop so he ended up having surgery on both wrists. If your mother was willing to give up crocheting, physical therapy might help. It's worth trying before surgery anyway. |
