What resources are available for long disstance caregivers, other than geriatic caregivers at $100/hr?

I am baby boomer with aging parent on limited resources.Interested in nonprofit agency with social workers who can give care management services for health care only? Any information is appreciated.

Wow! I am seeing your question often in Yahoo Answers!

The response to call your local Department on Aging --which could also be known as the Area Agency on Aging--serving the county where your parent lives is the first place to go. Area Agencies on Aging are one of the best kept secrets available to older Americans. These organizations have staff that truly know how to listen to seniors and their family members and can provide guidance and advice on the services that your parent is needing--information that will be of great help to you and your parent. They deal with questions and concerns of seniors and caregivers like you every day. And they are not "selling" anything--like a particular insurance plan or service--so the information put forward is is objective.

Something to know: many Area Agencies on Aging are non-profit organizations or are affiliated with local government.

You can call 1-800-677-1116 toll free to find out the phone number of your local Area Agency on Aging office. When you call the Area Agency office, ask for the person who provides "Information and Assistance" or "Help for Family Caregivers." If you make this call, I am confident that you will find friendly and helpful people.

The answer about making connections with the faith community of you or your parent's choosing is another good place to go. Many churches have services that might be able to help in a situation like yours.

If you call your Area Agency on Aging and like the help that you receive, let your county elected officials know and tell your members of Congress. Area Agencies don't have big budgets--in fact appropriations for most services funded under the Older Americans Act have not increased significantly in 25 years! You will not be charged for the information you receive, however, any financial contribution you or your parents might make for the time and assistance devoted to your situation would be very welcomed--and would go toward helping more of your older friends and neighbors and their caregivers.

I hope this helps and that you get this question answered! Best wishes and good luck to you and your parent!

Contact the Department of Aging, they should be able to help you. You can read about them on the web. They will send a Social Worker to determine your parent needs. Since they have limited income, the help they get will probably be free.

As a nurse who worked in a long term care facility let me say before you make any decisions check with your state nursing board. These places have to be inspected yearly for compliance with health codes and laws governing nursing homes. You can also check with your state ombudsman. The social worker will be able to give you that phone number. Visit the facility you are considering. See if the residents look happy, does the place smell clean, how do the meals look. Also check on the longevity of the staff. Staffing issues could lead to big problems. Good luck.

TALK WITH THE PATIENT'S DOCTOR OR SOME ONE IN HIS/HER'S OFFICE. CHECK WITH LOCAL HOSPITAL. JUST LOOK IN THE PATIENT'S LOCAL PHONE BOOK,CHECK OUT THE LOCAL PAPER FOR POSITIONS WANTED. DEPENDING ON THE LOCAL AND THE SIZE OF THE CITY WHERE THE PATIENT LIVES IF YOU CAN FIND PRIVATE NURSE AGENCEY. ASK NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS ,GET WORD OF MOUTH INFO. SOME BODY'S AUNT OR FATHER MAY HAVE NEEDED HELP SOME TIME OR ANOTHER. JUST GET THE WORD OUT YOU NEED SOME ASSITANCE WITH THE CARE OF YOUR PARENTS.

Have you checked with your local parish?Sometimes they have parishioners who are or were nurses or aids who volunteer to help parishioners in need.Be sure to make a contribution to that parish in consideration for any help that your parent may receive. This will still be considerably lass than a l/distance provider. It is a shame that our health care system has come to this, where hard working people cannot get help for their loved ones, but illegal aliens get it for free at our parents' cost...Good Luck

Depending on where you are... If your parents are low income the department of Human services have ways of helping. My grandmother was low income and she had people come in and care for her daily, clean house, shop, do laundry, bathe, and feed her. Now we had to get help on weekends but it sure freed up family members during the week and we were able to take turns helping her on the weekends. Check with their county Human Services.
