Which career is better to pursue? Nursing or Social Services?

I'm a young woman just trying to find her place in this world and the right career in life. I want to help people, because I just feel that there is more to life then just my own problems. Others need help too. The problem is I am interested in both careers, and I don't know which one to pursue. I'm attending San Bernardino Valley College... but right now I am at a center divider...I don't know what classes to take. I know I have to see my counsler... I guess I could just use a little adive or help from anyone out there. Please and thank you.

Both careers are good for helping people. With nursing I think you have more options (i.e., different fields to work in); while social services are limited. With nursing you have the opportunity to be payed better than with social services. Also social services workers tend to have shorter careers due their high volume of stress and their large number of case loads.

I am a nurse and I absolutely love my job. It is such a rewarding career but I feel that social services would be as well. You could always major in Nursing and pursue a minor in sociology and then work in an area in which you could perform both roles... the opportunities are endless in Nursing and with a minor like that- it would only open more doors for you in the future. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

medical definently. did you know that anesthesiology pays 250,000 a year to start? thats what i am going for

i think it is just a matter of preference
both careers are good and helpful to people and rewarding
nursing probably pays better, but Social service would be very rewarding for you and the ones you help
trust your own judgment

neither. they are both thankless jobs. go for med school instead - take it from a nurse.

I have met people going to be nurses and they are very positive going in but once they are a nurse they are miserable. They say the politics and rules don't let them live up to the standards they want.

They are overworked and underpaid and are mentally and physically exhausted. Most of them tell me they do it because it's their passion to help others and some even regret doing it as it wasn't as rosy a picture as they thought it would be. I think to be a nurse you definately can't be in it for the money or for free time.

I have a lot of respect for men and women that do that as I just couldn't put myself in that position of having to work those hours for such little pay
