Is there any cure for cardiomyopathy ?

Is there any cure for cardiomyopathy ?

You need to talk to your cardiologist. Whether a cardiomyopathy resolves or not is related to the underlying cause. For instance, alcoholic cardiomyopathy can get better if the patient quits drinking. Cocaine induced cardiomyopathy gets better if the patient stops abusing cocaine, sometimes. Viral cardiomyopathy can improve 30 % of the time. If the cardiomyopathy is related to repeated heart attacks, it may not get better. Depends on the cause.

once a cardiac cell is dead, its dead for life. you can control its symptoms and prevent further events. common medications are non dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers- eg, verapamil (most potent), and diltiazem

nope
well...transplant

There are three types of cardiomyopathy.

Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common and is caused by decreased contractility. Treatment is aimed at increasing contractility, and decrease preload and afterload to increase Cardiac Output.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is caused by hypertrophy and impaired filling of the ventricles (diastole).

Restrictive Cardiomyopathy is the least common and is caused by ventricular resistance to the filling of the ventricles. Treatment can include avoiding strenuous activity.

Regardless of which form, the only real cure is a heart transplant. Cardiomyopathy is the #1 reason for heart transplants.

Yes! Thank you, Amy P, for posting an answer with some truth to it! There are many causes for cardiomyopathy, some of which may be completely reversible and many of which can improve with proper treatment. Even the majority of patients with cardiomyopathies that do NOT improve will not need transplant during their lifetimes. To find out about your specific condition, you should see a cardiologist who can determine what the cause of your cardiomyopathy is and what your long-term outlook is. (nurse12 - if you are a nurse, you should know better than to say that cardiomyopathies can not get better!)
