Should i get my children tested for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?

My father died from it, i was tested and i am ok, but are my children at risk?

To my knowledge hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is an autosomal dominant disorder and therefore if you were carrying the gene you would express it. With this knowledge you shouldn't need to have you children checked. Having said this however it is also true that mortality rates for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is higher in children than adults and in my opinion it is sometimes better to be safe than sorry (especially when family is involved). I realise this is a 'little from column A and a little from column B' type of answer, but it'll at least give you something to think about.

The bottom line is see your family practitioner, he/she will sort you out with the best advice.

This family tree shows four generations affected by Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The condition is transmitted from one generation to the next without skipping a generation. This is called dominant inheritance. Each child of an affected person has a 50:50 chance of inheriting the condition.

So I'm thinking that if you don't have it then they probably won't either.

Did you have genetic testing or a probe of the heart? If you don't have the genetics for it then you can't pass it to children. However this is a disease that often doesn't show itself until late in life to the echo based tests that measure the size of the heart.

You should ask a professional about genetic consoling on this subject and see what information is available. I have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and my doctor has already cautioned me on the subject if I ever get married.
