Atrial septal defect?


Does anybody know the effectiveness of repairing an ASD by cardiac catheterization compared to the more traditional open heart surgery? If it's just as effective (or more), why don't more surgeons opt the CC route over open heart?

Don't give irrelevant explanations for the procedures that have nothing to do with the increased or decreased effectiveness. I already know how they are performed.

This procedure really work. As in, it is effective in covering the defect with what they usually term the "umbrella". I have heard cases though of this umbrella dislodging or any of that sort.

As a surgeon, i still prefer the traditional open heart surgery, and manually repairing the ASD. The mortality rate for this procedure should approach 0%..
