What is a cardiac S1, S2?

My medical exam revealed an S1, S2 with regular rythm, rate and no bruits, gallops, murmeurs, or rubs. Although there is a family hx of heart disease. Still, what is an S1,S2?

The previous answer is absolutely WRONG!!!

S1 refers to the FIRST heart sound. ("lub" of lub-dub)

S2 refers to the SECOND heart sound. ("dub")

There are also S3 & S4, but they are not normal.

The information you wrote describes a fairly normal exam.

Simply positions on an EKG, specifically to the left and right of the sternum.

CKM is right. This is something you do not need to know. Your Cardiologist can give you amswers in laymans terms, but a question like this is not for you to worry about. Electrophysiology is complicated even for people in the field, and why you have this information at all doesn't make sense. Definately you have every right, and responsibility too, to ask ANY question you want. But, you want to understand the answers. Heart problems of any kind are tramatic enough for patients, and their families.

If you have the right doc, he/she should be able and willing to make everything going on with you very clear. If not, get another doctor. You and your doctor should be a team in your treatment. If they have any other attitude, they either need to be confronted and change, or bye bye.

Some docs intimidate, and with many patients their actions are accepted as O.K. because 'they're the doctor'. You may even have to keep the idea in he back of your mind that THEY work for you. This may help.

Now, let me ask you something. Why the hell are you asking medical questions online? Do you realize that people who answer these questions probably don't know what their talking about, well intentioned as they may be? What if your question was very serious, and you got an answer from someone who was totally wrong, and you took their advise? Alot of people want to hear what they want to hear. I will paraphrase a question and answer I read in resolved questions a few months ago." I'm having this pain in my chest. It goes into my right arm, and I'm finding it difficult to catch my breath. I had a heart attack many years ago, but my doctor told me that if I took care of myself, I shouldn't have to worry about this happening again". The answer, and the BEST answer chosen by the asker. "I wouldn't worry too much. You should probably sit down and rest for awhile, and see how you feel. I know you're supposed to take an aspirin. Anyway, if the pain you had was in your right arm, it wouldn't be your heart. That pain is always in your left arm". Are you catching my drift? Not only is this guy a layman, he doesn't know what he's talking about, and could have put this person in very dangerous territory. Actually, we have no way of knowing what happened.

Only another medical professional would know the answer to his question. A professional in Cardiology. A person that specializes in this field is going to know that the answer given was absurd, too. You may not, and take the advise.

I'm also speaking to anyone else who asks or answers medical questions in this site. You need to keep your OPINIONS to yourself and realize how you could really harm someone. Wanting to help people is admirable, and you see it everyday in other catagories, but then you are not likely to be hurting anyone physically, either.

Please heed my advise.

The best to you, and you may contact me if you would like. Also, go into my profile and see if you're comfortable with some of my medical answers.
