Convulsions after cardiac arrest? |
How often do patients suffer from convulsions after cardiac arrest? Hard to say 'how many' cause many arrests are unwitnessed. I can tell you, I have seen many. One reason is lack of oxygen to the brain, that causes the seizure. I've seen it in many people who have 'arrested.' I'm not sure of the actual #, but when my mother had her heart attack she had a stroke at the same time, the stroke did cause seizures. Not all patients do suffer convulsions following a cardiac arrest. You do have to remember that an arrest is a disruption of the normal bio-electric rythms of the heart and circulatory system. COnvulsions usually occur because the body has lost circulation during the arrest, and following- if they survive the arrest- their bodies "jump start" back into operation. After heart attack convulsion is a occasional condition and it is time being as because of the stoppage of the circulation brain do not get oxygenated blood well in time it gives convulsion but as the circulation established again the convulsion vanish ! To minimise this rare effect we give anti convulsion drug like eptoin for few day or months !Always YouRsme |
