Heartattack Cardiac Arrest? |
When you have a heart attack and part of your heart dies what exactly happens? Does all the tissue in your heart die, or does your heart beat irregularly? What dies in your heart? When someone shocks you to get your heart going again how does that work? Actually, a portion of the heart muscle dies due to lack of oxygen to the muscle caused by a blood clot or piece of plaque blocking one of the coronary arteries which feed the heart mescle. There are different atreries wrapping around the heart feeding it with a blood supply. Depending on which artery is blocked, different portions of the heart muscle are affected. Depending on how long that portion of the heart is without oxygen will determine how extensive the damage to the heeart muscle is. When oxygen is cut off to a portion of the muscle, it becomes irritable and can go into a deadly rythum - ventricular fibralation or ventricular tachycardia. In either case, it isn't pumping enough blood to sustain life and the patient dies unless the condition can be reversed. A de-fribralator uses a small DC electrical current to momentarily stop the heart and allow it to get back into syncronization so it can begin beating normally again. With exercise, heart muscle can be made stronger post heart attack. Nothing dies. What happens is your arteries are blocked, causing no blood flow to your heart. When this happens, your heart stops beating. Immediate resurruction enables the blood to flow for a short period of time, in which case u have to get the patient immediately to hospital. During a heart attack, blood flow is blocked off to certain parts of the heart muscle. Depending on which artery is blocked, will determine where the damage and how extensive it is. This is where bypass surgery comes into play. They take arteries out of your arms and/or legs and reconnect the blood flow to that area of the heart that has been cut off. Shocking the heart involves using electrical activity to restart the heart. But, you must have some form of a heart beat in order for that to work. If you are in asystole, or flat line on the monitor, it probably won't be to any benefit. Hade a massive in '01. Hurt like hell. Nearly 1/3rd of my heart quit working. Enlarged to compensate.
