Papillary carcinoma? |
my mom has papillary carcinoma thyroid. it has been removed. but what is the risk involved after surgery and what is the follow ups. thanks. bye. The prognosis depends in part on what stage the cancer was in when it was removed. Typically papillary thyroid cancer is relatively non-aggressive, though one third of patients may have some lymph nodes in the neck involved, and 5-10% may develop distant spread of the cancer. After surgery, a scan is usually done to check for iodine uptake in the body. This will help find any areas of cancer spread. If this is found, a radioactive type of iodine will be given to kill off any remaining cancer. Your mom will need to be seen by her surgeon every couple months or so to reexamine her neck for new lymph nodes, and she will probably have repeat iodine scans done every 6-12 months to look for subclinical recurrence of disease. Overall the prognosis for this kind of thyroid cancer is good, and it tends to be very responsive to combined surgical and medical managmenet. |
