NSCLC/Squamous Cell Carcinoma treatment?

My mom was diagnosed last month with NSCLC/Squamous Cell Carcinoma. She is in Stage3.She saw her oncologist this week to go over her treatment plan. It seems pretty aggressive: Radiation every day and chemotherapy 2days/week concurrently for two months, & then chemo alone for an additional 2 to 3 months.

I know that radiation/chemo is difficult enough on a relatively healthy person (healthy other than the cancer); she also has liver cirrhosis and anemia. Her oncologist wasn't concerned about the cirrhosis (nor interested in the 12 medications my mom takes&said to talk to her regular doctor). We have asked her to have a 2nd opinion/consultation.

I have tried searching for info regarding the effects chemo has on someone w/liver cirrhosis, but only find information on liver cancer. Is there information re: chemo & cirrhosis? Are we right to be concerned how this treatment will affect her in regards to her liver cirrhosis (i.e. will her liver be able to handle the treatments)? Thanks!

While I can't tell you how her liver will react to chemo, I can tell you that they will monitor your Mom very carefully during her treatments...especially with any preexisting conditions.

More to worry about it her anemia...during chemo, a lot of folks have trouble with their protein levels. During her round with chemo, my Mom had to take protein shakes two or three times a day and had Procrit shots.

Another thing she had to have suppliments for was pottassium. Lots of bananas!

Good luck...stage 3 is difficult to say the least. My Mom passed this past April because her cancer returned with a vengence. Tell your Mom to hang in there!
