Is cervical carcinoma-in-situ actually cancer?

I have recently been diagnosed with carcinoma-in-situ of the cervix. The doctor said that the cells were not cancerous but as I search through articles on the web some say it is cancer while others make it seem not as extreme, like a form of dsyplasia. Can anyone help me sort this out and get a good reference to look at. Thanks

You either have pre-cancer cells or carcinoma (cancer cells). It's one or the other.
Carcinoma-in-situ means the cancer cells have not moved (metastasized) from the original site of growth. This is good.

I would talk to my physician further and get more details from him/her. It is their responsibility to inform you and answer all your questions. It's what you are paying this professional for, SERVICES that include information. Write your questions down and call your doctor back and arrange for another sit down chat. I would also want to know what his/her treatment plans are in your case. Any other doctors he might recommend you further consult, and reading resources as well and do you have some decisions to make in terms of resolution.
www.cancer.org is an excellent resource on-line.
I have a direct link to the area you would want to read about:

Somebody voted for their own answer- cause this is definitely NOT the best answer. Report It

Yes, but it is confined/contained in one area and is more easily removed/treated.

That means they are cancer. CARCIN - cancer OMA tumor
IN-SITU on that site If they get rid of it it usually doesn't spread beyond the cervix my doctor did however run a scope into my uterus and ovaries to make sure.

Yes and no.

Anything with the term "carcinoma" is technically cancer, but it's not necessarily "cancerous". It's a subtle distinction, but an important one. It's a form of cancer because it's an abnormal growth of cells that may spread, but it's not cancerous because it's not actually spreading, at least not right now.

This is good news, as it means you will have an easier time and more options in terms of treatment.

Still, my condolences, and GOOD LUCK!

good news baby girl,
CIS(carcinoma-in-situ ) is actually a precursor of cancer,IF UNTREATED but you are saying that the doctors are cool about it.just make sure it is benign and you got nothing to worry about

take care

Cervical carcinoma-in-situ is a precancerous condition. The cells display some abnormalities such as disorganization, immaturity, and increased mitotic activity, but they remain in their original location and have not invaded surrounding tissues.

Another classification system calls the condition a type of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Carcinoma in situ is classified as CIN 3. CIN 3 precedes invasive carcinoma (cancer).

Noninvasive cervical lesions such as carcinoma-in-situ can be removed. Local recurrence rate is 10-15% and progression to invasive disease is rare (2%) after local therapy.
