How can i avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning if i can not afford a Carbon Monoxide detecter?

keep good air circulation in your house (open windows), call your gas company to come and check all your gas lines. Call the fire department sometimes they will offer to install a CO detector for free, or they can recommend on where to get one cheep.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by incomplete combustion. Therefore, only things that use fire can produce it. Electric appliances are completely free of CO. Good air circulation is a great idea for generally improving the air quality in your home. Having your wood/oil/natural gas/propane appliances serviced routinely and shut down if you suspect they are malfunctioning could prevent CO exposure.

A warning sign that you have CO poisoning is that you feel profoundly sick (throwing-up, headache). Removing yourself from that environment and getting immediate medical help is vital to your survival. CO has a 5 hour half-life in blood and can be moved out more quickly with oxygen in high concentrations for a day or so. If you suspect that you have CO poisoning, it would be prudent to call an ambulance. Once getting care, you would probably be put on an oxygen mask. In the hospital, blood would probably be drawn and sent for co-oximetry to see if something is bound to your hemoglobin that is not oxygen.

Everyone has 1-3% CO in their blood, up to 10% for smokers. High levels of CO cause victims to became sleepy and they may die if not removed from their environment.

The best way to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning is keep your combustion appliances maintained properly.
Most CO detectors on the market in the US will only sound an alarm when a level of 30ppm has been detected for more than 30 days. So it is wise to check for signs of CO problems at the source as low levels of CO are a health concern.
