How long do you need to be exposed to carbon monoxide before you become poisoned?

Question on the carbon monoxide because I left the house yesterday at 7pm and accidentally left the stove burner knob on a little. I arrived back home around 9:20pm and the house smelled terrible of gas. He said he was asleep the entire time and didn't smell anything. I wonder if he is poisoned or if I need to do anything? We quickly opened all windows/doors, turned on all fans and a/c to circulate the air...until 11pm. By then the smell was gone.

Ok, first, if you were smelling gas then you don't need to be concerned with carbon monoxide poisoning. Natural gas has to be burned before Carbon monoxide is created and you would't be smelling gas. This type of poisoning typically occurs from home appliances when the applicance isn't maintainted properly or is not vented properly.

The symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning are similar to the flue. If the person who was potentially exposed isn't exhibiting any symptoms, no worries.
