Carbon Monoxide?

What are preparations i can take for carbon monoxide ?
What is the first thing i should do, when my alarm starts ringing ?
How long does it take for it to go into affect ?
Can it kill ?, if so how long can you live once poisoned ?

You need to go to a hospital that has a hyperbaric chamber. Although you may get 100% oxygen therapy by other methods, the hyperbaric chamber is the only way to detach the carbon monoxide from your hemoglobin and allow the oxygen to attach. Carbon monoxide poisoning CAN BE FATAL depending on the amount of hemoglobin affected. If your body's cells do not get sufficient oxygen, they will start to die. The hospital staff can take a blood sample and analyze how badly you have been affected.

The best thing to do when your carbon monoxide detector goes off is to get out of the house. Of course, you should tell the others in your household to do the same and make sure that you take your cat or dog with you.

The effects can be immediate because as soon as you breathe in, the gas exchange will take place between the lungs and the blood. Instead of oxygen, carbon monoxide will get into the blood.

This is a very serious condition. Don't delay, get checked out by the hospital. Your life depends on it.

"Carbon monoxide is a significantly toxic gas with poisoning being the most common type of fatal poisoning in many countries.[13] Symptoms of mild poisoning include headaches and flu-like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system and heart. Following poisoning, long-term sequelae often occur. Carbon monoxide can also have severe effects on the fetus of a pregnant woman.

The mechanisms by which carbon monoxide produces toxic effects are not yet fully understood, but hemoglobin, myoglobin, and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase are thought to be compromised. Treatment largely consists of administering 100% oxygen or hyperbaric oxygen therapy, although the optimum treatment remains controversial.[14] Domestic carbon monoxide poisoning can be prevented by the use of household carbon monoxide detectors."

keep an alarm where you sleep, if only one alarm and you have children keep it with you, not with the chilren. You can take care of them if they fall asleep, they will not be able to help themselves if you do.
get out of the house, call poison canter, go to a doctor to be examined for CO poisoning
CO, when dense, will knock you out in a few minutes and will cause death (running the car in garage suicide) after about 20 min though this is dependant on concentration.

you should have at least 2 CO detectors to be safe.
if your detector alarm starts, go outside at once and call the fire dept., they will come out and test to see the accurate level and tell you what is the source of the CO is.
CO builds up in the blood and displaces the CO2 and is not effectively removed by your lungs, which basically suffocates you
