How many carbohydrates should I consume if I want to lose weight?


I weigh193 and have been losing weight steadily over the past 6 months. I have lost a total of 40 pounds. I started eating a diet very low in carbohydrates (20-30). Should I continue eating this few?

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

You should really be able to eat 50 - 60 a day. I've been no carbs for 10 days, and have lost 15 lbs and 2 - 3 " and have now started adding back the low level of carbs. My old boss lost 100 lbs. on Atkins, under a doctor's supervision, and at 50 - 60 g of carbs a day, he has kept all of the weight off for over 8 years.
