How does cannabis help treat gastroesophagael reflux disease.and what are some tips for getting my med.card ?

i have sufferd with acid reflux for years and i all ready no that cannabis helps me, cannabas works better than any thing else and i can still hold down a job, take care of my family, and all those kind of things, the cannabis doesint make me lazy are any thing like some people would tell you. but what i want to no is how does the cannabis work does it just numb the pain or does it control the acid or what i think it does more than just numb the pain. i am going in soon to see a doctor to try to get the ok to start using it legal, i only have a few doctors records, my last one was about 8 mounths ago my g.u.r.d. acted up to the point that i vomited blood and so i went to see the doctor, before that the records may span years,do you think this will mater to the doctors when they make there decistion if i should use cannabis ? do you have any tips for me when i go in to see the doctors ?

You might have a hard time convincing most physicians that smoking cannabis is a treatment for GERD.

The consensus of all studies and opinion is that smoking of any products, just by the nature of the action, reduces the production of saliva by up to 50%. Saliva is a significant source of bicarbonate, when this is reduced by a significant percentage there is an increase in the acidity of the upper gastric region. Which is why smoking increases the severity and promotes the development of GERD.

You might be able to make an arguement for the use of cannabis for control of nausea and pain, if your intention is to consume the product orally. Cannabis does have a long history of use for pain control, and is well researched in the control of nausea in cancer and AIDs patients.

There is no significant research into the use of cannabis in GERD. One minor study reported in May 2003 Journal of Physiology showed that THC reduced acid reflux. Again this was the use of purified THC and not the use of marijuana for smoking.

While I feel that properly studied and appropriately understood, cannabis should be used legally for medicinal purposes, despite any state laws, the used or distribution of cannabis in the US is not legal under Federal Law. So even with the medical card, in a state which has passed laws legalizing the use, the medical card really is only a function of the decriminalization process, as opposed to actually legalization.
