Will having a positive drug test (cannabis) affectmy chances of getting my student visa for australia?

in response to some of the answers:
im not a dealer, i have no criminal record
i smoke but not all the time, its recreational
i dont drink and dont judge people who do, i know cannabis aint legal but alcohol is a drug afterall and in my opinion one that causes huge amounts of damage (to the people who are obv judging me rather than giving productive answers)
i dont think i shud lose an opportunity to better myself, im hard working, intelligent and do loads for charity most of my mates smoke and it is deemed 'normal' i personally think it shud be legalised as then it could be controlled for strength i.e. less pyschoses as a result..

While I am not judging you in any way whatsoever, I do think that they would be hesistant on giving someone who is breaking the law a student visa. There are many students who want this opportunity so competition can be fierce. While you are not secretly a mass murderer, the law still is the law. Goodluck though!

You'll just have to apply and see...after all nothing ventured nothing gained......no harm is done if you do get rejected.

have you actually had a positive test? Do you have to take a medical for the visa? that sounds wierd. Even if you have had a test in the past you don;t have to declare it.

I've never heard of this problem. Are you in the USA? as testing for canabis is really rare in the UK.

Or do you mean that you got a caution or sometihng from the police once?

If you do not have a criminal record like you said and you are not taking the durgs at the time you apply then, I don't think it will be a problem.

Nice try to justify your behavior. But you actually said it....it IS illegal. Testing positive for any illegal drug will keep you from getting a student Visa. They want to give it to someone who is clean and doesn't use drugs--even for "recreation." And Australia doesn't want a druggie coming over there and bringing their addiction with them.

Go to a head shop, buy the stuff that cleans your system, and take your drug test clean. Don't risk it.

ij ust wanted to say "RIGHT ON" and ::high five:: screw what people say about it, we know who we are, and as long as you are loved for who you are thats all that matters. and why would you be testing positive? there are many ways even discrete ways to get out of that. and no it shouldnt affect anything financially.

and yes, alcohol should be the illegal drug, but, if we all were allowed to do as we please this wouldnt be the land of the free. ::rolling eyes:: they have to control SOMETHING in our lives in order for us to be free.

Hey im a toker too and not a bad person! smoke it to help with my disability....have you had a test yet..? if you havent then I suggest you dont partake in it for a bit....in the meantime drink lots of water but dont drown yourself lol....if ur not a heavy smoker then u should be fine!

Not knowing what country you are in makes it difficult to give a true answer. Assuming you are in UK I would take the advice that you went to Amsterdam for weekend. Drug testing is becoming more common nowadays. It is done randomly where I work and if you test positive then I beleive you are sacked. Dont know of anyway around this as the test they use can pick up traces in the body from 3 months prior to testing. Anyway Australia!!! Isn't that where we sent criminals years ago.
