How do I switch from using a cuff/forearm crutch to a walking/travel cane? |
I am an 18 year old male and am diagnosed with spastic diaplegia cerebral palsy. I have less strength in the right side of my body, so as a result I am solely left handed in all I do. They reason why it feels so unstable is not just because you are not use to it but because a for-arm crutch keeps the wrist stable. When you are using a regular cane the stability depends a lot on your wrist strength and your grip strength. Start strengthening your wrist by holding and twisting a dumbbell. Then start using the cane only around the house or dorm room. This will allow you to get comfortable with it in a stable setting. when you first begin it is important to rest when you wrist gets tired as continuing well make you more unstable. You walk will also change. you will have to figure this out through trial and error. After you have figured out your motion and increased your strength start taking it to class, but first start it on the days that you have the fewest classes. Make sure you give yourself as much time as possible, because at first you will be a little slower. Then progress forward. |
