How do I switch from using a cuff/forearm crutch to a walking/travel cane?

I am an 18 year old male and am diagnosed with spastic diaplegia cerebral palsy. I have less strength in the right side of my body, so as a result I am solely left handed in all I do.

My upper body strength is very good, as you might imagine and I am well-toned. I would like to not only equalize that strength on my right side but transfer to using a walking cane/stick as well. However, I feel very unbalanced and unsure when I use a cane, most likely due to the fact that I am used ti the crutch.

How could I go about confidently mastering cane usage? I am a college student and can't afford to walk slowly all day during the week or I would be late for classes. What if I used a crutch in my left hand and the cane in the right while focusing on placing the heavier use on the right side with the cane?

Thanks for any and all help! Sorry this is so long :)

They reason why it feels so unstable is not just because you are not use to it but because a for-arm crutch keeps the wrist stable. When you are using a regular cane the stability depends a lot on your wrist strength and your grip strength. Start strengthening your wrist by holding and twisting a dumbbell. Then start using the cane only around the house or dorm room. This will allow you to get comfortable with it in a stable setting. when you first begin it is important to rest when you wrist gets tired as continuing well make you more unstable. You walk will also change. you will have to figure this out through trial and error. After you have figured out your motion and increased your strength start taking it to class, but first start it on the days that you have the fewest classes. Make sure you give yourself as much time as possible, because at first you will be a little slower. Then progress forward.
I also must say that this process will be much easier if you ask you Physical Therapist to help you. They can show you the proper techniques and strengthening routines. Your transition will be much shorter.
Anyway, if you go the solo route just take it slow, and DON'T use a crutch. This will ultimately not help you in what you want to accomplish.
