What is the proper use of a cane?

Should a cane be used on the same side of the injured leg?

The text book answer is to use it on the hand which is opposite of the affected extremity. This is because it gives you a larger base of support when standing on the affected leg as opposed to using it on the same side. This creates a situation for better stability. There are certainly conditions, however, where someone needs to use it on the same side, such as if someone has had a stroke in the past or is unable to use the appropriate upper extremity.

If anyone ever watches House MD, it drives me nuts that they come up with all these high tech or outrageous solutions to medical problems, but the writers have overlooked that House uses his can inappropriately!

It is what you feel most comfterable with.
Canes are used to help people walk.
So whatever way works best for you is the solution. If it is serious serious pain, I would recommend the same side.
