Can a woman with cervical cancer have a child? |
Can they even get pregnant? Also, can it be cured? Women with cervical cancer normally end up with removing the cervix and the womb and sometimes even the ovaries. Getting pregnant before taking the cervix out in a natural way is probably very difficult because of all the tumors inside the cervix blocking the sperms. After the surgery, if the womb and the ovaries are left in the body, pregnancy should be possible by in-vitro process. The method of the delivery after the cervix is removed is c-section. C SECTION yes, its possible as long as a hysterectomy hasn't been performed. The short answer is "yes" to all three parts of the question, but there are many factors to consider, the most important being the mother's health. Cervical cancer can be cured if caught and treated early, but the treatment includes a hysterectomy (removal of entire uterus - not just cervix), thereby eliminating any chance of having a child. If the cancer is found in the later stages of the pregancy, there probably is a chance that the mother could get the blessing of her physician to carry to term (or near term) and have a C-section, realizing that every day that goes by without treatment is a worsening prognosis for the mother. I think a vaginal delivery might be risky because the cervix would probably be friable and damaged from the cancer, making a vag. delivery dangerous to the mother and potentially the baby. If the cancer was detected in the early stages of pregancy, the mother would most likely be advised to terminate the pregancy and proceed with treatment and staging for the cancer. Chemotherapy can NOT be given while the mother is pregnant due to the damage that would be caused to the baby. |
