Does a child with stage 4 Wilms Cancer have a higher risk of relapse than one with stages 1,2 &3? |
Stage 4 favorable Wilms Tumor-My daughter has been in remission for six months but the fear of relapse is never far from my mind. Please don't sugar coat any thing I just want a straight answer. Her cancer tumor had taken over her right kidney and had also spread to her lungs. She had the tumor removed along with right kidney. Treatment was 6 months of chemo and 8 radiation treatments. I know all kids a different but I just would like to know some statistics. My cousin is 3yrs. old and was found to have a wilms tummor in her right kidney as well at 20 months old. hers was stage 4 favorable and had spread to her lungs and her left kidney. The right kidney was removed and then recived the same treatments as your daughter. She is also doing very well now. The Dr. told us the that it depends on the age when you get Wilms and the stage and the longer you go cancer free the chances of it returning goes down. If the child is under 2 when they first get a Wilms tumor the chances are much higher of it returning. The Dr. didn't give us exact figures but a child as young as my cousin and with the stage she had has almost an 80% chance of getting it back the first year after treatment. Then every year this goes down more and more. He also said that he has rarely seen kids have a reocurance once they make it out past 5 years. Her Dr. gave us books with a lot of information about wilms you may want to ask her Dr. if you can get these books. Even if it would return the Dr. is probably seeing her every month and doing scans at least every 3 so he would have a good handle on controling it. It is scary but keep positive and I'll keep you in my prayers. Stage IV Wilms' tumor is defined as the presence of hematogenous metastases (lung, liver, bone, or brain), or lymph node metastases outside the abdomenopelvic region. As the stage number goes up, the prognosis goes down. The favorable type has a better prognosis than the unfavorable type. So a stage IV tumor always has a worse prognosis than a stage III or II. |
