Common problems children cancer paitents face? |
This is for kids who have had cancer or have face a surgery. I would like to know some of the common problems they face when on bed rest in the hospitals, after a surgery or during recovery times. Any problems that you think should be solved or anything you think is flawed in making it as easy for them as possible. Any answers help! Thanks! Thanks for telling me the positives, but what are the negatives of this? Other than being lonely. Common problems they face physically. I was 21 when diagnosed, so I wasnt exactly a child. But, what my mom did and what other parents try to do and succeed in doing with minor patients... The parents try to run the treatment sometimes without considering the wants needs and feelings of the child. It doesnt happen all the time, most parents do respect the choice of the child, but it does happen. Well, my son was 17 when diagnosed with a childhood cancer. The biggest problem that he faced was that he was the oldest 'child' on the pediatric ward. Not only that but the bed was too short for him, so they needed to bring in extensions. Also all the medical equipment tended to be suited for a small child and not an adult size young man. He had respiratory distress one night and the nurse tried to put a tiny oxygen mask on his face. The tubes they used were always too small . . and worse . . the needles sometimes were too tiny to adequately draw the blood . . so it took forever. He was always a good sport about it all . . but really . . when he needed to go in for a treatment the table was covered with brightly colored childrens hands and a mobile with planes hung in the room. There was always plenty of stuffed toys and children's books . . but nothing for a teenager. Because he is in between pediatrics and adult patients . . sometimes he is also on the adult floor . . which is even worse. Everyone on the floor is over the age of 60 or much older than that. Even the nurses can't get used to a young patient . . so whenever he went out walking around the hall he would be chased down and told to not walk so fast!!! my husband had bone cancer around the age of 3 and was in a hospital until 5 with numerous surgeries and treatments..for him the worse negative side effect is he has a lot of scars and his legs are deformed..to him it is a big deal and he thinks people are always starring at him cause he walks a little different..he used to say to me your staring at my gymp legs..where as i hardly even noticed that they are bent a bit |
