Can benign brain tumour turn into cancer?

Can benign brain tumour turn into cancer?

Benign means that a tumor has not YET turned cancerous. It does not mean that it will stay benign forever.

Any benign tumor has the capability of turning cancerous. Consider it a stage . . the 0 stage of a tumor is benign . . the next stage is 1 where it has turned cancerous . . the next three stages are more serious degress of cancer.

As for benign brain tumors . . they are treated often as if they were malignant. The problem is that primary brain tumors rarely 'metastasize' . . they tend to stay confined up in the brain and grow. They are deadly because there is no room in a confined skull for a tumor. They can quickly overtake the normal brain functions . . no matter if they are benign or cancerous.

So, the answer to your question is . . yes . . a benign tumor can turn cancerous (and can be just as dangerous even if it is benign) . . best to have it treated so that it does not cause trouble either way.

no

if it's benign, most likely it wont. Malignant tumours are what you should be worried about. However, benign tumours may cause slight discomfort.

no but it's as serious

benign means non cancerous...so most likley not... but somthing can always happen, but like i said benign means non cancerous so dont worry about it much

Benign means non-malignant or non-cancerous, Tumors can occasionally be misdiagnosed. Benign tumors of the brain can still be very troublesome depending on their location. If they are too deep or involving vital brain centers they can be inoperable. Since the skull is rigid and has a limited capacity the danger of any tumor there is the rapidity of its growth.

Cancer can form almost anywhere so yes it could form in a benign tumor. The abnormal cell formation in a brain tumor probably means there is a slightly elevated risk of cancerous changes occuring however, depending on the type of the tumor, the possibilty of it happening would be similar to an ordinary mole on your skin suddenly changing into a malignant melinome (ie. really small). The real concern of a benign brain tumor would be what kind is it, is it growing and what part of the brain is it affecting?

Not likely, but yes. ~

Gliomas make up most cases of primary brain tumors. Grade 1 and 2 gliomas, also called low grade gliomas(LGG), are considered benign. However, 80% of LGG will eventually transform to grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). This is because of accumulating genetic flaws. Genetic instability is a common trait among gliomas (and many other cancers). The tumor cell seems to have lost the ability to detect or repair further DNA damage or self-abort (apoptosis). This leads to the de-differentiation (less maturation) of the cell.

microsatellite instability (brain tumor cells are often used as examples)
