Is a Radioactive Iodine uptake test necessary to rule out thyroid cancer? |
A relative of Mine has had thyroiditis and initial testing says she has High T3, T4 but low TSH. She also has a benign Nodule. I told her to wait for the TSH antibody test results and not go for the Radio Iodine Uptake test yet because of it's sideeffects. She could just have Grave's disease which could be diagnosed from the Antibody test! Yes, absolutely. Iodine -131 responsible for thyroid cancer , if present in the body is to be tested as soon as possible as the half life of this isotope is only eight days. If the patient waits longer, one is sure to die soon. The test uses a body scannen through which the body passes. If his body has I -131 element in the thyroid, the element will emit invisible highly penetrating X-ray like Gamma rays. The source itself is Iodine-131 in the body, which if is confirmed to be present, has to be removed from the body either by surgery or by some consumable medicines which catch, get attached to it & are excreted out of the body as waste. The rays emitted out of the Iodine-131 source in the thyroid penetrate the neck & came out falling on Gamma ray detector which records its signal accurately on electronically controlled automatic machine. It is totally non destructive technique of sensing & confirming the cancer without any harm. Thanks Report It |
