Worried about cancer? |
My mom went for a mammography recently and the results showed an area the radiologist believed to be benign but it is reccommended that she goes back for a follow up in 6 months. A doctor also called the house today and it's a saturday. Do I have reason to worry? Do you think she has cancer? She had a lump removed from her breast already a few years ago. What are the chances that we're just as lucky this time and that it's nothing. I'm very concerned. I've worked with many doctors who have diagnosed and treated many women with breast cx. If he (or she) has suspecions that it is cancer they would follow up immediately not 6 months from now. When ever something comes back abnormal it is routine to check up again sooner than you usually would. The mammo probably showed cysts or hard fatty tissue, not a cancer. Relax, this is nothing for you to worry about. not yet I will say a prayer for you,but since the Dr. is going to follow up in six months leads me to think he's not concerned at this time.i would ask my Mom though why he called,I am a mother myself and we tend not to want to worry or tell our children our problems,so if she know you know it might give her someone to confide in,and you might also get some relief good luck and I Will send out a prayer. She will be fine, ask the big boss above to let her be fine...the doctor may have called to tell you she is o.k. also...what about that? My son has leukemia and he is in remission but the doctors said it may come back, and It will be twice as bad if it does....all I can do for him is PRAY... I am sure you are concerned and every woman has a right to be. In this case, the radiologist who read the mamogram probably didn;t have any other free time to call...so don't put too much weight on it being a Saturday. If you are concerned, ask for the mammogram xrays and take them to someone else for their interpretation...it is always wise and ethical to get a second opinion. The recommendation of coming back in six months is so the physician (radiologist) can check the area he thought was benign, to see if there has been any changes in it. If she has no personal history of breast canvcer, or her maternal mother, or grandmother or her own sister didn't have breast cancer before the age of 60, she should be ok...but if all I have said doesn't help your worries, see someone else and have the mammogram repeated somewhere else....the cost should be alleviated by your peace of mind. |
