Define the following terms related to cancer?


Malignant, benign, metastasize, melanoma, pap test, lumpectomy

Malignant means cancerous tumor
Benign is a non cancerous tumor
Metastasize means a cancer has spread
melanoma is a malignant (cancerous) growth
pap is abbreviated for the man whom developed a test for women to check for cervical cancer...a few cells are swabbed from the cervixn to check for cancer)
Lumpectomy is the surgical removal of a lump

Malignant is usually used to refer to something that is harmful to the body. Usually a tumor. When it is malignant, usually some sort of treatment needs to begin ASAP.
Benign is just the opposite of malignant. A benign tumor is one that exists, but is not harmful or not cancerous.
Metastasize is when the cancer or cancerous cells grow and spread, often to other areas/organs of the body.
A pap test (pap smear) is a test performed to check for cancer causing cells in the cervix. They are usually performed around the time a women enters college or becomes sexually active and repeated at different times depending on your sexual activity and test results.
Melanoma is used to refer to a skin cancer. It is also used to refer to a specific tumor (of the skin) that is malignant.
A lumpectomy is the removal of a tumor or cyst in the breast. It is different than a mastectomy in the aspect that in a lumpectomy only the tumor is removed, leaving as much breast tissue as possible while in a mestectomy the entire breast is removed (usually because the cancer has invaded a large amount of surrounding tissue)

metastasize-cancer that has moved beyond the original organ. For example, my breast cancer metasized to my lungs, liver, and bones
melanoma-an extremely aggressive skin cancer
pap test-a sample of cervical tissue is taken to check for cancer and venerial disease, lumpectomy-removal of a cancerous or non-cancerous lump and usually the surrounding tissue
