How often should i get a check up for cancer?

They found in my tonsils but i was told it was benign (that the cancerous cells werent active) and they removed my tonsils. They took other samples to make sure they got it all. But i have to wait for the results now im wondering if they got it all.... how often should i get a check up to make sure it didnt return?

see they found it only because i kept getting sick from my tonsils and so i had them removed once they removed them they tested them to find out why they would stay swollen all the time without pain. and now we know.

This is something that you MUST discuss with your Doctor. I developed bladder cancer in 2000. Needed surgery and chemotherapy. I was tested every two months for the first 6 months, every 6 months for 4 years and now once a year. My tests included cat scan, blood work, and a physical examination. My cancer got through the bladder wall and invaded the lymph nodes in my groin. That is why I needed extensive chemotherapy.

I have a blog where I discuss my fight with bladder cancer since 2000. Cancer is cancer - it does not matter what part of the body it invades. Have a look at my blog. http://www.mybladdercancersite.com

Best of luck.

Neil

you should alway lean on the side of caution and ask your doctor.

Well that's really for the doctor to tell you. I suggest waiting for the results then talk to your doctor about your concerns.

Maybe every 3 months or so.

they'll call u with the results they just take forever they found a weird lookin welt on my chin and they took a piece of my chin out and they had to stitch it up and take it in for tests and everything they thought it was cancerous but they were wrong and it never returned that was 2 years ago

every 4 months for the first year, every 6 months for the next two years, and then once a year for 5 years, then go back to normal (once a year for check ups)

Be sure to ask your doctors that. I would guess once every 3 months or once every 6 months for a few years and then annually with you physical for life.

Depends on the pathology from your cancer. What type cancer it was can define your needs for additional periodic screening.

The fact that you have had cancer once increases (slightly) your odds of having it again - but that increase is "not statistically significant" in most benign cases.

The "C" word is scary to anyone who gets the news but it is NOT a death sentence. Follow your doctor's guidance and get a second opinion from another doctor/facility. The second opinion is not because you don't trust your doc, it's so you can feel comfortable with the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Get the specifics from the pathology report and research the specific type cancer you had on line. Use web sites like webmd.com, clevelandclinic.org, mayoclinic.org, etc.

Use wikipedia.com to translate the medical jargon.

Go back to your doc fully educated and with a specific list of questions. Don't leave until you get answers.
