You hear about food poisoning all the time, E.coli and salmonella oubreaks and the like, but what happens (if it does indeed happen) when someone contracted two or more pathogens like the above two or Hepatitis A, Aeromonas, Campylobacter, etc? Do they 'help' each other out? Is it frequent? all food contaminated or not contains lots of bacteria. You will definately have ingested billions per day or more. Why doesnt those bacteria cause disease? (They can). this is because there are already so many bacteria living in your GI tract preventing ingested bacteria from sticking to your intestine and growing. bacteria cannot reproduce unless they stick to something and over come host defenses. about e-coil, you already have millions of e-coli cells in your intestines. you get food poisoning when e-coli has been in food and has had enough time to product enterotoxins. if someone contract 2 different infections yes they can help each other out. this is called synergy. for example, staphylococcus aureus helps some bacteria grow more effectively. this is called satilite growth. toxins produced by bacteria can compliment each other too. i highly doubt that you will contract 2 types of food poisoning from food at the same time. this is very rare. there is too much to say about this matter. the final answer is that it all depends on the situation. which are the 2 bacteria, which strains, where are you buying food from? if you eat outside your country most likly you will be sick because you have no immunity to bacteria that residents will have there. |
