Disadvantages of calcium pills? |
My parents keep nagging be about drinking milk and stop taking calcium pills. I want to stay healthy and I hate milk. I just don't see any sense in their argument. Plus, can you get too much calcium? I take two pills a day (1200mg). That's about the number us teenagers need. It's always better to get your nutrients from a food source because our bodies have a hard time absorbing nutrients that come from supplements. If you don't like milk or dairy, you can always drink fortified OJ or soy milk. At best, keep taking your Calcium supplements, but take them with vitamin D (because they work in unison and will absorb better), and take 1 in the morning and one at night. Don't take it all together because your body has a limit on how much calcium it can take in at a time, so spreading it out will ensure you get it all in your system.. none i hate milk to and i drink calcium pils every day tto! Unfortunately the drinking of milk does not ensure an adequate supply of calcium. Since milk also contains protein which will leech the calcium. A much safer and surer supply would be the calcium tablets! It's better to get nutrition from food. Dairy supplies you with more than just calcium (protein, D, B12, A, B2 etc). Yoghurt gives your gut healthy bacteria. Keep taking your 1,200 mg (600 mg twice) a day. They are probably calcium carbonate tablets containing 600 mg of calcium and the calcium is not absorbed that well so the amount of calcium that you are actually absorbing is considerably less than 1,200 mg (from two 600 mg tablets) so without milk you are NOT getting too much calcium. |
