Are calcium pills "race" specific? |
I bought a bottle of all day extended release calcium 600 with vitamin d from target. I got home and started reading the rest of the box and noticed a note that said "Regular exercise and a healthy diet with enough calcium helps teen and young adult white and asian women maintain good bone health and may reduce their high risk of osteoporosis later in life." I'm African American, is it ok for me to take these calcium vitamins? I hope I don't sound dumb but I guess I have never saw/paid attention to a note of such on a box of vitamins. Thanks to all in advance :-) Ok, in most cases the sad truth is that most pharmecutical companies don't do research on how their products work with us specifcally. In this case though, research states that Whites and Asians get osteoporosis way more often than we do, so they target products like calcium supplements directly to them. That way Whites and Asians who pick up that product feel like the it's tailored to their needs when it fact it's just regular ol' calcium. In other words it's just marketing. Don't worry. Take your calcium and feel good about being so proactive about your health! Thank you very much!!!! Report It I think it says that because caucasians and asian races are more likely to develop osteoporosis. This is really just a guess because I have no idea how a calcium supplement could possibly race specific. I think you are fine to take it. You might ask your doctor before taking it though because you don't want to take too much. |
