Can low calcium levels effect your heart? |
I had my thyroid removed and in the process they removed a calcium nodual. I take 9 calcium pills a day but there are days I forget and only take 3 or 6. Lately I have been feeling a little chest pain. Can this be from low calcium? Calcium is required for the heart as is Potassium. Both are positively charged " ions" that are necessary for cardiac function ( heart). First, you need to contact your Doc. When was the last time you had your levels tested ?? It is extremely important that you take your medications, make follow-up appts. with your Doc and, have repeated blood tests to monitor your Calcium ( Ca++) levels and thyroid levels. However, chest pain should always be considered an emergency. It may be from a variety of factors but, you need to have your heart tested. Are you eating properly, do you drink alcohol excessively?? Not trying to offend you but, these can be causes of low Ca++. Any recent, multiple blood transfusions?? Any history of pancreatitis?? Certain medications can cause decreased levels of Ca++. Anticonvulsants ( seizure medicines), Aspirin, steroids( Prednisone), Lasix ( Furosemide, a water pill), heparin ( blood thinner), HRT ( Hormonal Replacement Therapy), the birth control pill, albuterol ( medicine for people with Asthma). Chest pain may occur but, it could very well be something else. Please get evaluated. YES Ca plays a major role in cardiac rhytm, rate, and contractility. if you had your thyroid removed, make sure you take your Ca pills |
