Abnormal calcium bloodwork?

34m. Had a physical last week, including standard bloodwork. Got a letter from my doctor showing results. Everything is fine, except she wants me to return for an additional calcium test/bloodwork. Unfortunately she is on vacation this week. Is this serious? Is a calcium test an underlying test for a more serious condition? Thanks

Thanks everyone. The letter did not indicate whether it was high or low. I drink a large amount of milk >1/2gallon/day. I am a very active mountain biker and weightlifter who crashes often and have never broken a bone (I fall hard) I do have a history of kidney stones about every 8 years. I am approaching the 8 year mark now....

Thanks again.

It can indicate possible problems that require further testing.

yes

could be......calcium imbalances could be from a number of different sources, parathyroid or thyroid problems and bone pathology are common. Check out WebMD if you are concerned, remember understanding your body is one of the most important things you can do to lead a healthier lifestyle

You don't say if your calcium level is low or high. If low it is known as hypocalcemia, and calcium can be released from bones (where it is stored) to balance your body level. If high levels then you have hypercalcemia and you can store excess in your bones or have it pass out of your body.

Calcium tests are used to diagnose a range of things from kidney stones, excess calcium intake, to more rare disorders. Depending on whether your calcium level is high or low is what your Doctor is looking for. I would not be concerned at this point, but would educate myself by going to medical and educational sites, such as the one below.

Calcium is imperative for developing healthy bone mass. Without calcium your bones become weak and brittle and fracture much more easily. Invest in a bottle of Tums. Tums don't do a damn thing for your heartburn but they contain calcium. Eat one at every meal or at least three times a day. Every day. Even when your calcium level is good. You'll be glad you did when you become an old fuddy-duddy. My nurses father had weak bones. He was lying on his couch and the mere weight of his own body caused his back to break. No kidding. When you go back to your doctor tell her about the Tums. She will agree.
