Do CT scans,xrays cause cancer?

Do CT scans,xrays cause cancer?

Only in extremely rare situations will the radiation from x-rays or CT scans figure into the development of cancer. An example would be a small child that had either childhood leukemia or maybe a bone tumor which necessitated having many CT scans and or x-rays over a long period of time eventually being at a higher risk of developing a secondary cancer as they grew older. It all comes down to risk vs benefit. Without the CT scans the child would have died anyways at a much earlier age.

yes, but only for people constantly exposed, such as x-ray techs. that's why they're so well paid :)

X-rays emit radiation, which is why they give you a special covering whenever you get them. Radiation is known to cause cancer. It also can cure cancer.

Excellent question. Yes, any ionizing radiation such as X-rays and CT scans which use higher doses of radiation can raise the risk of cancer.

The risk is deemed to be highest in children, since they have the longest lifespan and thus have a longer period that would allow cancer to develop.

The medical profession is (finally) waking up to the fact that multiple scans can be harmful to patients.

Here's a fact for you: An abdominal CT scan is the radiation equivalent of 400 chest X-rays!

In the coming years, up to 2 percent of all cancers may be due to CT scans being performed now.
