When a person goes in for a MRI or CAT scan, when do they get the results of the scans?

Can a person get them the same day or days later or weeks later? Thanks!

It depends on the individual case and why the patient had the scan to begin with. In a routine MRI or CT a patient will probably wait to speak to his doctor about the results. That might take days or a week depending on when the appointment is scheduled. For cancer patients that is usually the same day or within a few days depending again on what is being looked at. It is possible to have the scans pretty much within an hour or two. The last scans we had done the doctor was asking for them before they were completed!! So, we had the results immediately after the scan was finished. Unfortunately it wasn't what we wanted to hear. I hate scan days.

It usually take about a week and your doc will get the results and call you with the results or discuss the results when you see him again for follow up.

I got mine in the same day...

i'm in canada, which usually takes 2 days. if the x-ray tech notices something really big he'll get the doc in and they will give a diganosis right away. if it's routine, non urgent 2 days. patient may wait about 1 week to find out (it has to be sent to the family doc). i work in a hospital which takes a few hours, couple of days, depending on severity and situation

if you are a patient already admitted to the hospital, we will get the results either same day or typed report next day. If it shows something serious the radiologists usually calls the results. If you go in for an outpatient test, it can take a few days for your doctor to get the results...
